Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) is one of the most widely used analytical techniques in the scientific community. It combines the separating power of liquid chromatography with the detection and identification capabilities of mass spectrometry.

LC-MS has become an indispensable tool for analyzing complex mixtures, especially in fields such as pharmaceuticals, environmental analysis, and metabolomics. The technique enables scientists to separate and identify individual components within a mixture, providing valuable information about their chemical structure and concentration.

Some of the key advantages of LC-MS include its high sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy. It can detect compounds at very low concentrations, making it ideal for trace level analysis. One of the main components of LC-MS is the mass spectrometer, which consists of three main parts: an ion source, a mass analyzer, and a detector. The ion source converts the sample molecules into ions, which are then separated by their mass-to-charge ratio in the mass analyzer. Finally, the detector measures the ions and produces a mass spectrum that is used to identify the compounds present in the sample.

Overall, LC-MS has revolutionized the field of analytical chemistry by providing a powerful tool for the separation, identification, and quantification of compounds in complex mixtures.
